Knut och Alice Wallenberg Stiftelse, WGLN II - Wallenberg Global Learning Network II finansierar Rutiga Familjen under projektnamnet Teachable Agent Games for Early Mathematics. Högskolan Väst i Trollhättan och Stanford University i USA inleder därmed ett internationellt och interdisciplinärt samarbete. Spelutvecklingen och pilotstudiens empiriska resultat kommer sedan att vara RF:s proof-of-concept och ligga till grund för eventuella framtida WGLN ansökningar.
Finansieringen sker över en period av 1 år och mellan sept 2006 och aug 2007 görs följande:
- Fördjupning av relationen och samarbetet genom produktiva träffar IRL, där bl.a. Daniel Schwartz håller ett föredrag på Högskolan Väst och Lena Pareto presenterar pilotstudiens resultat (se nedan) på WGLN:s symposium i Lund. Observera att parterna inte tidigare hade träffats.
- Vidareutveckling och implementering av prototypen. Lena Pareto utvecklar spelet vidare genom att förbättra presentationen av spelets matematiska innehåll samt genom att införa artificiell intelligens i form av en agent.
- Pilotstudie genomförs och prototypen testas i en vecka av en klass i årskurs 4 (21 elever). Målet är att testa deras förståelse av decimalsystemet, av sambandet mellan de olika enheterna samt av additionens effekter. Testet består av en pretest, en spelsession av 1-1,5t och en posttest samt en gruppintervju med alla deltagare. För spelsessionen delas gruppen i två, där den ena halvan spelar utan agent, men mot datorn och den andra halvan spelar själv, lär upp sin agent och observerar sin agent spela RF.
